Sergeant Major William A. Phelps

Operations Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major William A. Phelps joined the U.S. Army from Farmington, Michigan in 1993 as a Cannon Fire Direction Specialist and attended Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill, OK.

Sgt. Maj. Phelps’ duty positions and assignments include; C BTRY, 3rd BN, 29th FAR Fort Carson, CO as an Advanced Party Man, Horizontal Control Operator, Vertical Control Operator, and Radio Telephone Operator; C BTRY, 8th BN, 8th FAR Camp Hovey, Republic of Korea, as the Fire Direction Computer; B BTRY, 2nd BN, 319th AFAR Fort Bragg, NC as the Chief Fire Direction Computer; A BTRY, 2nd BN, 80th FA Fort Sill, OK as a Drill Sergeant; HSB, 2nd BN, 319th AFAR Fort Bragg, NC as the Senior Fire Control NCO; B BTRY, 2nd BN, 319th AFAR Fort Bragg, NC as the First Sergeant; HHB, 2nd BN, 377th PFAR JBER, AK as the Operations Sergeant; HHT, 1st SQDN (A), 40th CAV (RSTA) JBER, AK as the First Sergeant; HHC, 4th BCT, 82nd ABN DIV Fort Bragg, NC as the Security Transition Team Deputy Chief; HHB BDE, 18th FA BDE, Fort Bragg, NC as the Operations Sergeant Major; 5th BN, 3rd FAR, JBLM, WA as the Battalion Command Sergeant Major; 18th FA BDE, Fort Bragg, NC as the Brigade Command Sergeant Major. His current assignment is the Operations Sergeant Major for the 19th Battlefield Coordination Detachment in Ramstein AB, Germany.

Sgt. Maj. Phelps’ deployments include multiple deployments to Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Spartan Shield. Sgt. Maj Phelps military education includes the Basic Leaders Course, Advanced Leaders Course, Senior Leaders Course, First Sergeant Course, and the Sergeants Major Non-Resident Course Class 39. He is also a graduate of the Basic Airborne Course, Air Assault Course, Jumpmaster Course, Drill Sergeant Course, and the Equal Opportunity Leaders Course.

Sgt. Maj. Phelps’ awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (4th Award), Meritorious Service Medal (7th Award), Army Commendation Medal (4th Award), Army Achievement Medal (9th Award), Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/3 Bronze Stars, Iraqi Campaign Medal w/ 4 Bronze Stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Korea Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NATO Medal w/ Bronze Star, Combat Action Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Drill Sergeant Identification Badge.

He has also been awarded the German, Egyptian, and Jordanian Foreign Jump Wings and is a member of the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara.

Sgt. Maj. Phelps is married and has four children.
